Archery Season - 2004 - Bill Barrick

At first shooting light noises of deer approaching the stand from downwind.  At about 35 yards the deer stops out of my sight, snorts loudly as he leaves.  Disappointment sets in..... five minutes later I hear another deer coming on another trail downwind.  Guess what?  Same thing again.  The buck snorts, leaves and I can hear him quite a ways of still snorting as he leaves the area.  Another short span of time and the wind shifts a little westward toward another trail and the third deer of the morning begins the snorting routine.  Well, I finally decided to do something about this age old problem.

Opening Day finds me standing by a pine tree watching a holly tree across the creek about 50 yards away.  There was a heavily used trail coming from the left to the tree then went away from the creek.  A trail was on my side of the creek that connected to the holly tree.  The wind was blowing directly from me down this trail and as I looked in that direction I saw a deer approaching.  I was using the first prototype of BREATHE OUT that morning.  I pointed the old 30-30 at the trail in front of me and took the deer at 12 feet away.

Opening day evening hunt.  I was sitting in the same tree stand where three deer smelled me in 2004.  The weather was warm and the animals and birds were quiet.  The woods were still.  About an hour and a half from dark, a breeze began to stir and the squirrels began to move and the birds began singing.  Then I clicked the horns together lightly.  Five minutes passed, then clicked them again.  I pull fibers from bright orange yarn and turn loose on the breeze.  I could see several fibers in the weeds in a strip about ten feet wide.  Next thing that I saw was antlers ten yards beyond the fiber markers.  The deer came in from downwind, turned broadside then looked away.  After the shot, the deer traveled 17 yards.  Nice eight point.  Second use of BREATHE OUT.

December 2, 2006 - Laguna Atascosa

I left my tripod stand 300 yards from the hunt area because of the metallic noise.  Found a spot about sixty yards from my buddy and sat on a stool hidden in small brush with a shooting lane in front of me.  Wind was blowing in my face.  Deer walked behind me, came out of the brush on a trail on my right and circled in front of me at 26 yards.  Fourth use of BREATHE OUT.  This buck measured 150 3/8 officially and rough scored 159 and 1/2.  It had eleven measurable points.
